So, obey is a four letter word. (Thought I’d start out
obvious since yesterday’s post was about the floweriest start possible.) But
really. Four letters.
Sometimes we hear it as a cuss word, a vibrating command
that shoves hard
and makes us want to shove back.
We feel it as a useless parley that brings neither peace nor
truce to the fight of our lives.
So why go there?
In the never-ending kaleidoscope of my inner childhood,
“obey” was the essence of Pandora’s box. I didn’t get it. I didn’t want to get
it.
It has taken a long time for Jesus to soften my heart to
this word, and now it’s time to get really uncomfortable and cozy.
Because it’s not that kind of four letter word. It is life.
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does
not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
-John 3:36-
